SBJ Staff ReportMay is small business month, a hail and hearty group of companies in our area. The Savannah Small Business Chamber held its annual event to recognize leading smaller companies from among its members, at an event changed from its usual annual luncheon to what was called the First Annual “Soiree." The evenings award ceremony and networking was held around the Avia Hotel pool.
Four businesses and business leaders were recognized this year: Lynn Fairbanks, General Manager of WJCL-TV received the Janice Gantt Memorial Small Business Champion award; Lisa Scarbrough, owner of Coastal Pet Rescue, received the Community Advocate Award, sponsored this year by WJCL/Fox28/The Coastal Source.com; Kathy Sliz, owner of the Decorating Den, was named New and Emerging Business of the Year; and Gary Field, owner of NuBarter, was named Small Business of the Year.
Neither Field or Sliz was able to attend.
The event was also the time for the announcement of the group's incoming board members which include James Rahal of Cordasco, Sundem & Powell, PC; Connie Halloran, with WJCL-TV; Dana Skiljan with Liberty Tax Service and Kim Jones with SvannahJobs.com.
Outgoing board members were thanked for their service, including Carol Kirchner, owner of Smart Feet; Marcia Stinson with Comfort Keepers; and Rob Cordasco with Cordasco, Sundem & Powell, PC.
The other current board members for the year ahead will include: Cindy Meagher with Sullivan Group; Sue Burke with Square Peg Marketing; Tom Campbell, owner of Health Insurance Services; Jamey Expina of Hospice Savannah who will serve as President of the organization; and Sallie McClelland.
