SBJ Staff Report

Nov 21, 2011 – The Garden City Water Department was recognized at an event last Thursday, Nov. 17 at the Garden City’s City Hall.

Garden City has earned the WaterFirst designation, the highest mark of quality a community can receive from the State of Georgia for excellence in water quality, watershed assessment, stormwater master planning, conservation, water supply planning and protection, water reclamation and reuse as well as wastewater treatment and management.

City staff and elected officials were on hand as well as members of the WaterFirst Program from the Georgia Department of Community Affairs (DCA).

The WaterFirst Community Program is a voluntary partnership between local governments, state agencies and other organizations working together to increase the quality of life in communities through the wise management and responsible protection of valuable water resources.

The City of Savannah, City of Tybee Island and Hinesville have received the designations, as well.

As a WaterFirst community a local government is eligible for financial and other benefits from the state.  Becoming a WaterFirst community demonstrates a government's commitment to responsible water stewardship for environmental and economic benefits today and in the future, as well, according to the DCA.
