SBJ Staff Report
Dec 5, 2011 - The U.S. Postal Service held a public meeting last week discuss its proposal to move some mail processing operations from the Savannah Processing and Distribution Facility in Pooler into the Charleston, Macon and/or Jacksonville Processing and Distribution Centers. The meeting was held Nov. 29 at the Southwest Chatham Library.
A study was begun on Sept. 15 at the Savannah Processing and Distribution Facility to determine the feasibility of consolidating redundant operations, and to see if any efficiencies and cost savings would be achieved. Initial study results support consolidating some mail processing operations that are currently being performed in Savannah by taking advantage of available processing capacity at the other sites. The USPS is facing a $ 5 billion operating loss annually.
While no final decision has been reached, Postal Service managers gave an overview of the reasons for the proposal and its possible outcomes, and listened to community input and concerns.
A summary of the proposal and presentation materials are available online one week prior to the meeting at http://about.usps.com/streamlining-operations/area-mail-processing.htm.
