A 25-year veteran of law enforcement in Savannah has been named commander of the Southside Precinct of the Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Department. Larry Branson, 54, was assigned the new responsibilities Friday by Police Chief Willie Lovett. He replaces Capt. Paul McBurney, who retires at the end of this year after 31 years with the department. “Capt. Branson is an experienced precinct commander who has the tools we will need to continue the improvements other captains have made in the Southside precinct,” said Chief Lovett. “Southside is a large precinct with the greatest number of large shopping areas and challenges our other precincts don’t have. I am counting on his expertise and management style to help make that precinct even more successful.” Branson takes command of the precinct headquartered in Oglethorpe Mall after more than a year as the assistant division commander of the Communications Division.  Branson was responsible for bringing the Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) to SCMPD and remains as its coordinator. He previously has served as precinct commander in the Central and Islands precincts. He also has served as commander of the Savannah Area Regional INTELLIGENCE Center, and the Savannah Impact Program.
