Aug. 24 - Gullah Gala Set for Downtown Beaufort Gallery

Aug. 24, 2012 – Cultural gathering of South Carolina Lowcountry artists will showcase a wide variety of folk art with paintings, fabric, baskets, jewelry, books and mixed media. The Green Herring Art & Framing Gallery will host the first Gullah Gala  at 1101 Bay St. in historic downtown Beaufort, SC, Saturday Aug.  25 from 10 a.m.-5 p.m.

The public is invited to the free event for food, beverage, music, art demonstrations and meet and greet while browsing the various examples of original works created by local and regional artists. Art will be for sale, and donations from proceeds will benefit the ABLE Foundation's Disabilities & Special Needs Program.

Gallery owner Hank D. Herring, an accomplished framer, creates unique graphics from rescued materials such as driftwood, discarded metals or fabrics.  He learned whittling from his two grandfathers and quilting from his family, crediting his family with artistic stimulation. He creates original wood stamps used for batiking, and then the stamps themselves become pieces of art. He teaches at the Children’s Educational Village in Atlanta as the village printmaker and continually shows his passion for the community and the arts through public events and forums.
