The Area's Toughest Golf Courses Released in SBJ's Annual 'Book of Lists'

SBJ Staff Report

The Savannah Business Journal has released its latest list for the 2011-2012 ‘Book of Lists’, announcing the ‘Areas Toughest Golf Courses’ this week.(See attached list.)

All golf courses in the 13-county Coastal Georgia and Lowcountry region were researched and ranked based on the most recent Professional Golf Association (PGA) rating system.

The course rating is a measure of the difficulty of a course for a scratch player. Such a player would be expected to shoot 67 on a course rated near 67, or 75 on a course rated near 75. The course ratings are used to help golfers determine whether the course they've selected is appropriate for their ability, and the numbers are also used to help determine how many handicap strokes a player will be allowed.

The list also provides up to date information on the professional golf directors for each course, as well as contact information and rates for play.

There have been a few changes in rankings since the SBJ last released its golf course research in 2009, and a change in the Pro at a few courses.PGA rankings are also important in attracting tournaments and avid golfers looking to challenge themselves.

The toughest course in the region is the Pine Lakes course at the Jekyll Island Golf Club with a 75.6 ranking, designed by Clyde Johnston, Dick Wilson, and Joe Lee.

The course is a par 72 course, and is 6,276 yards long.Head pro is Rob Ellis.

Second toughest is the Robert Cupp Course at Palmetto Hall Plantation with a 75.2 ranking. The course is a par 72 course and is 7,079 yards long. The pro is Claude Thorn.

Coming in third toughest is the Harbour Town Course at Harbour Town Golf Links on Hilton Head. The course is 6,973 yards long, a par 71.The head pro is Skip Malek. The course was designed by Pete Dye and Jack Nicklaus.
