June 2, 2016 – 8:00 p.m. – The summer college baseball team in its debut season in Savannah, the Savannah Bananas, opened their first home game Thursday night at Historic Grayson Stadium on Victory Dr.  The game was scheduled for 7:05 p.m., and was sold out; 4,000 tickets have reportedly been sold.

For local elected officials, particularly those who some believe are responsible for losing a Minor League franchise here, there are a number of crossed-fingers that the new baseball offering will be a big business success.  Mayor Eddie DeLoach was on hand to throw out the first pitch.

According to team owner Jesse Cole, there are still a few General Admission tickets available for Friday night’s home game, but the box seats are sold out for the season, as are the special promotional hosting events on the right-field deck area.  Both are good signs that the business community has embraced the new team which features top college baseball players.  A number of the players are members of Georgia college and university teams.

Wednesday night, the team was on the road, playing the Holly Springs Salamanders, scoring an 8-6 victory.  In their opening game of the season on Tuesday, the Bananas fell to Martinsville.

Greg Hollman, a sophomore at Savannah State University, pitched 6 innings against the Salamanders in a game that saw half of the Bananas’ eight runs come in a spurt in the fourth inning. Those eight hits came from eight different players – a good indication that the team has a strong batting lineup as the season gets underway.

Matt Anderson, a rising sophomore at Georgia Southern University, was added to the roster today as a ‘conditional player.’  GSU returned on Monday from Texas, competing in their division’s national championship.  Anderson, a native of Evans, GA., will arrive in time for Friday night’s game.

Friday, the Bananas will play Florence, SC., and then head back on the road playing Saturday at Fayetteville, NC.

In all, the team will have 24 regularly scheduled home games unless they make the playoffs in August.
