June 7, 2016 - Speaker of the House David Ralston (R-Blue Ridge) has appointed Rep. Bill Hitchens - Co-Chair (R-Rincon); Rep. Barry Fleming (R-Harlem); and Rep. Al Williams (D-Midway) to the State Commission on Petroleum Pipelines from the Georgia House.

This commission was established by House Bill 1036, which was signed into law by Governor Deal on May 3, 2016.

The commission will examine the legal and regulatory environment concerning petroleum pipelines in Georgia and, if necessary, recommend policy changes to protect the public interest.

Hitchens called for the bill, and has expressed significant concerns about underground pipelines, in an interview with the SBJ.

According to Rep. Hitchens, a member of Chatham County legislative delegation, he is waiting on the Speaker of the Senate to make his three appointments, and the Governor to make his appointments.  Still to be appointed is the Co-Chair, who will lead the work of the Commission with Hitchens, who will be from the Senate; five experts in the field; a representative from the Georgia Dept. of Environmental Resources; and a representative of the Georgia Dept. of Community Affairs.

The Commission is supposed to complete its report and final report by December 31.
