Savannah Business Journal Staff Report

October 6, 2017 - Hold onto your Lederhosen, Savannah! It’s time for beer, brats, bands and wiener dogs at the Savannah Waterfront Association’s 34th Annual Oktoberfest, Oct. 6-8 on River Street! Celebrate your Columbus Day weekend in true Savannah style as we celebrate our German heritage with a great schedule of fun events all weekend long. Chefs will be serving delicious German offerings and other inspired creations throughout the weekend. Bring your family down to the waterfront and enjoy some awesome bands, local artisans and plenty of activities for the kids!

Oktoberfest officially kicks off on Friday afternoon in Rousakis Plaza with the ceremonial tapping of the keg and the keg barrel roll races down River Street. Come enjoy the festivities and some great German beers while the Rhinelanders Oompah Band provides live entertainment. The festivities continue with live music on the Rousakis Plaza Stage Friday evening. On Friday and Saturday, Collin Moulton will entertain the waterfront crowds with his Barefoot Comedy and emcee skills, and Graham Allen brings “The Rant” to River Street. The waterfront welcomes back 2016's Georgia Music Awards Country Male Artist of the Year Lance Stinson to the Rousakis Plaza Stage Saturday night. Another solid band lineup is set for the plaza on Sunday, including Junkyard Angel and Monkey Man. A VIP tent provides prime stage viewing with special food and beverages throughout the weekend.

You won’t want to miss any of the excitement and one of the great Savannah traditions on Saturday, October 7th when the Savannah Waterfront Association proudly presents the 40th anniversary of the Oktoberfest Wiener Dog Races at 11:00AM in Morrell Park! Following the dog races, join us for a great lineup of music, stein races and fun activities in the park all afternoon. Sweet Feet is bringing their soccer and mobility programs to Morrell Park, so bring the kids for an afternoon of fun in the park!

The art and painting classes in the Waterfront Kidz Zone® take on a fall twist with pumpkins serving as canvases for our art projects. Proceeds from the pumpkin painting will be donated to the Savannah Chapter of the March of Dimes. We will host activities, games, corn hole contests and more for kids and the young at heart all weekend long. If you need to keep up with your favorite football team, we will have the college and pro games on so you won’t miss a minute of the action!

SWA proudly announces The Humane Society of Greater Savannah and the Savannah Chapter of the March of Dimes as our Community Outreach Partners for Oktoberfest. “We are all facing challenges after the hurricanes, and we felt we needed to help with some of those most vulnerable in our communities” said Victoria Smith, Executive Director of the Savannah Waterfront Association.

“We’ll have representatives from the Humane Society of Greater Savannah attending the wiener dog races in Morrell Park and coordinating pet adoptions for festival patrons. We’re asking everyone to donate a can of pet food when they come down to watch the race,” Smith continued. “SWA is equally fortunate to also be working with the March of Dimes this Oktoberfest. We hope lots of kids can help stamp out prematurity by visiting the Waterfront Kidz Zone and participating in our pumpkin painting classes.” Souvenir pumpkins are $10, with proceeds benefiting the Savannah Chapter of the March of Dimes.

Oktoberfest hours are 4-11PM on Friday, 10AM-11PM on Saturday and 10AM-9PM Sunday, Oct. 6-8, 2017.
