A number of Savannah’s top business executives and business owners are listed on the Host Committee for a fundraiser this Thurs. night, June 24, at The Mulberry Inn for Savannah attorney Gary Wisenbaker, Republican candidate for the State House District 163.  The seat was vacated by long-time State Rep Burke Day, a Tybee Island resident, who choose not to seek re-election after holding the seat for many years.

 

Heading the list are Tom Wiley, chairman of the board of The Coastal Bank, who is the Treasurer of Wisenbaker’s political committee. Also on the list:  Jim Armstrong, Mitchell Bush, Steve Chick, Ted Clarke, Ray Gaster, J. Hamrick Gnann, Paul Hansen, Kim Iocovozzi, Felton Jenkins, Joseph Mercer, Henry Minis, Henry Monsees, J. Whitley Reynolds, Mark Smith, Harry Spirides, J.T. Turner, Jr., Don Waters and Walter G.B. Wright. 

 

David Simons of Simons Political Consultants is advising Wisenbaker in his second attempt to gain the seat.

South University graduated 376 graduate-level students – the Class of 2010 - last Friday, June 18 at “hooding ceremonies” at the Civic Center.  They received their academic hoods in different ceremonies, one for the College of Art & Sciences, College of Business, College of Nursing; another for the School of Pharmacy; and a third for the College of Health Professions

 

South University also conferred 709 undergraduate and associate degrees at the Savannah International Trade and Convention Center. The university’s student body has grown in recent years, necessitating the change in venue from the Johnny Mercer Theatre.

 

With 80 doctorate, 296 master’s, 221 bachelor’s, and 112 associates degrees, university officials had prepared for  3,500 guests to join the Class of 2010 last Friday as they walk across the stage. The university’s Chancellor, John T. South, III, delivered the commencement address.

The PGA TOUR will be coming to the Golden Isles this fall with the inaugural McGladrey Classic, to be held October 4-10, 2010, which will be played on the legendary Seaside Course at the Sea Island Golf Club on St. Simons.  Tickets are now on sale. McGladrey is one the U.S.’s largest public accounting firms.

 

The Davis Love Foundation is the host organization, with Mark Love, serving as the executive Director of The McGladrey Classic.

 

Proceeds from the tournament will benefit Special Olympics, the charity designated by title sponsor McGladrey, and local children and family charities supported by the Davis Love Foundation.

A few weeks ago, Savannah Riverkeeper was contacted by the creator of a documentary video, Chris Hannant, who wanted to interview someone from the organization that was knowledgeable about the Savannah River. Local environmentalists hooked him up with SRK Board Chairman, Joe Hinely, who is an avid fisherman with immense knowledge about the ins and outs of the Savannah River. Local company APX Alarm is giving back to the community in support of America’s Second Harvest by providing food relief for low-income seniors this past Saturday, sponsoring a “Brown Bag for the Elderly” event. One in every eight Americans is at-risk for hunger and in some Coastal Georgia communities, as many as one in every four people is at-risk for hunger. There are more than 10,600 senior citizens in our region whose incomes are insufficient to meet their basic needs.

 

APX Alarm sales personnel and technicians elected to help with the Brown Bag

program as part of the company’s Gives Back initiative which launched in June. Through APX Gives Back, the largest alarm company in our country will support local communities by giving $250,000 to charities and by donating 15,000 hours of community service to programs like Brown Bag for the Elderly, according to Stuart Dean, spokesperson for APX Alarm.

Just down the coast, NTE Energy in St. Augustine, FL. has announced that Kiewit Power will be joining NTE in the design, development and construction of hybrid renewable power plants. Kiewit Power is a major integrated EPC provider to the North American power industry, located in Lenexa, Kansas, and will bring technical engineering, procurement and construction capabilities to the NTE team.

 

Kiewit has already successfully completed gas and renewable power projects, including the recent repowering of Progress Energy Florida’s Bartow power plant in St. Petersburg, FL;  the 885 MW, combined cycle, dual fuel, Tenaska Virginia Generating Station in Fluvanna County, VA; and the addition of two combined cycle power blocks at Progress Energy’s Hines facility in Lakeland, FL.

 

Kiewit Power is a subsidiary of Kiewit Corporation, a private Fortune 500 company, founded in 1884 and based out of Omaha, Nebraska.
