Oct 24, 2011 – The political action committee that includes a number of executives in leadership with the Savannah Area Chamber of Commerce, has announced its endorsements for the upcoming City of Savannah Municipal elections on Nov. 8.

All candidates were offered an opportunity to participate in an interview process including questionnaires and candidate interviews with the Savannah Area Business Political Action Committee Inc’s (SABPAC) board of directors. The PAC is a separate legal entity from the Chamber of Commerce, and operates at “arms length” from the Chamber though Bill Hubbard, Chamber president, and Trip Tollison, Vice President and head of political affairs for the Chamber, both serve on the PAC’s board.

The PAC has decided to endorse and contribute financially towards their slate of candidates that include:

Mayor: Edna Jackson

Alderman At Large – Post 1: Carolyn Bell

Alderman At Large – Post 2:  Tom Bordeaux or Bill Gillespie

District 1: Van Johnson (incumbent)

District 2: Mary Osborne (incumbent)

District 3: Larry Stuber (incumbent)

District 4: Mary Ellen Sprague

District 5: Greg Hagins or Warren Hickman

District 6: Tony Thomas (incumbent and unopposed)

The SABPAC is defined as “a group of area business leaders who collectively support pro-business candidates in local elections, and is made up of businesses that represent all areas of the economy throughout the Savannah area,” according to the groups' press release this weekend. Steve Green serves as chairman.

The PAC was not required to file a report with the Georgia Secretary of State by the Sept. 30 filing deadline because it raised less than $25,000 as of that date, but will be filing within the next day or two with the City of Savannah, with the Clerk of Council’s office.

The SABPAC is registered as a separate, Georgia nonprofit organization. All contributions and expenditures of the PAC are reported on the local level. The Chamber’s leadership team created the PAC in 2001.
