Savannah Business Journal Staff Report

March 10, 2015 – The Downtown Business Association’s March luncheon will feature District Attorney Meg Heap as the group’s luncheon speaker.

The Member Spotlight event will begin at 11:00 a.m, with seating at 11:50, and lunch at noon at the Charles H. Morris Center at Trustees Garden on East Broad Street.

Ms. Heap was elected District Attorney as of January 2013.  She began her career as a Volunteer Coordinator and Victim Advocate with the Victim-Witness Assistance Program located in the Savannah District Attorney’s Office, which she states “ignited a lifelong passion of working with victims of crime and senior citizens.”

After law school, she worked in the Cherokee County District Attorney’s office prosecuting a wide range of cases including murder and child molestation. In 1995, she began work as an assistant district attorney in Chatham County handling Superior Court Division misdemeanor cases, moving to felony cases in 1997. At the end of 2005, Heap was assigned to handle elder and disabled adult abuse cases, the first such prosecutor in the state. She served as Chief Assistant District Attorney from the beginning of 2009 to fall of 2010.

Heap left the DA’s office in 2010 to work as a staff attorney in Superior Court Judge Penny Haas Freesemann’s office, and practiced private law from August 2011 until her election in 2012.

She was born and raised in Savannah, is a graduate of St. Vincent’s Academy, and attended Georgia Southern University where she graduated Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology. Heap obtained her Juris Doctorate from Mercer University.

Registration is available online at www.Savannahdba.com or at the door.  Catering is by Magnolia Grill Company. Member cost is $35.00.  Non-members is $40.00 at the door.
