March 24 - Savannah Police Debut Live Stream Video Reporting Service

Savannah Business Journal Staff Report

March 24, 2020 - The Savannah Police Department recently announced the implementation of a live stream video reporting service that will help social distancing efforts amid the novel coronavirus pandemic.

“SPD is constantly looking for ways to enhance our operations using technology while also offering optimal service to the members of our community,” said Assistant Chief Stephenie Price. “We are excited to announce the implementation of our new live streaming service which will allow officers to take reports while communicating with callers through a platform called Lifesize.”

Lifesize is a platform which gives officers the ability to easily communicate with citizens through video conferencing. As calls come through the Chatham County E911 Center, they are sorted by priority depending on the type of call and whether it is a life-threatening or in progress call. Officers will monitor the system to see which calls match the criteria for this service such as there not being an injured person, a suspect on scene or any evidence to process. Once officers come across those calls, and as resources are available, they will contact the caller to see if they would like to participate in this service.

Interested callers are sent an email on how to access the Lifesize app. Mobile users will need to download the free app that is available on any smartphone device. Desktop computers or laptops can access the Lifesize site without downloading an app. Participants have the ability to submit digital evidence consisting of documents and pictures, and officers are able to take screenshots of information with the caller’s permission.

SPD understands that with these difficult and fast-changing times, it is important to offer citizens different methods to file a report along with having face-to-face interaction. This service is only available to those within the Savannah Police jurisdiction. Callers have the right to refuse using this service and utilize another option to file a report such as the Online Police Reporting System or by filing a report over the phone by calling (912) 651-6675.
