Aug.17 - Savannah Gamers Lose $88.5 Million Lawsuit

By Lou Phelps, SBJ Staff

Aug. 17, 2010 - Six gamers, including Alyson Reeves of Savannah, lost an $88.5 million copyright infringement case today, first reported by Bloomberg News, for allegedly reverse-engineering online software and violating the copyright of Blizzard Entertainment, Inc.

The California-based gaming company that won the judgment in a Los Angeles court is the publisher of the “World of WarCraft,” an online computer game, was represented by the Chicago law firm Sonnenschein Nath & Rosenthal.  Attorney Bonnie Lau, lead counsel on the case, would not comment on the decision today, however, directing all inquiries to the firm’s marketing department.

The case docket indicates that Reeves is from Savannah; there were also five unnamed co-defendants.

Reeves is the owner of a former website www.scapegaming.com, first launched in 2008. That site’s online registration indicates that she is from Plano, TX., not Savannah; however, her Texas phone number is disconnected.

With the Savannah College of Art & Design’s Interative Design and Gaming Dept, growing in prominence in Savannah, and efforts by The Creative Coast to encourage gamers to work here, a number of “gamers” are living and working in the area.   SCAD states that Reeves "is not a current of former student, alum, professor or faculty member" of SCAD.

Georgia Tech has also developed an entertainment technology research dept, both in Atlanta and Savannah, part of the Georgia Tech Research Institute (GTRI), that is bringing gamers to town.

Scapegaming has a Facebook page with thousands of followers.

Reeves has a Linkedin.com web page that states she is a partner in A&C Entertainment, a music and video company.

Bloomberg is reporting that Reeves and her co-defendants made no “response to court filings and were apparently unrepresented by counsel.”  The news outlet’s story reports that Blizzard Entertainment claims that Reeves collected $1.5 million in online fees.
