Switch From Alltel to Verizon Is Official as of Oct 1

Category: Technology & Innovation

Verizon Wireless will officially kick off its transition of taking over former Alltel customers in the Savannah market on Oct. 2, when Verizon opens its renovated store
All former Alltel customers are now on the Verizon Wireless system, a process that has taken place over the past nine months since the company purchased Alltel in January.
Oct. 1 will “finalize the integration of former Alltel customers to Verizon Wireless in Savannah. These efforts include welcoming these customers onto the nation’s largest and most reliable wireless voice and data network, the remodeling and rebranding of the Savannah retail location and managing a multi-million dollar conversion of network operations in Savannah and across the state,” according to Jeff Mango, president of the Georgia/Alabama region for Verizon Wireless, who will be in Savannah that week.
For the transition, Alltel customers were allowed to stay at their current rates rather than paying the higher Verizon Wireless rates.
However, “If you change the plan you had with Alltel, your rates are no longer grandfathered in,” said a former Alltel customer.   “They don’t have a 1,000 minute plan, either,” she said.
For example, Alltel customers on their 1,000 minutes month plan, which included free voice mail and a number of other enhancements, paid $49.95 a month before taxes.  Verizon Wireless does not offer a 1,000 minute a month plan.  Instead, they have a 900 minute a month plan for $59.99 plus taxes, which also offers voice mail and other calling features.
Alltel had a “My Circle” plan which offered free calling to finite list of Alltel subscribers chosen by the customer.
Verizon’s primary marketing campaign is called “Friends & Family.”  Minutes used to call any other Verizon customers are not charged to monthly minutes.
Verizon’s newly remodeled store at 7805 Abercorn St., Suite 27, will officially celebrate the switch from Alltel to Verizon Wireless with a ribbon cutting ceremony on Friday, Oct. 2, at 9 a.m., supported by the Savannah Area Chamber of Commerce.
