Category: Economic Development

Congressman John Barrow has announced the Georgia Ports Authority will receive a $2 million Economic Development Administration (EDA) grant to expand the capacity of the Garden City terminal at the Port of Savannah. The funding, which is provided by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, will create additional jobs and private investment in the region.

“This port is our gateway to the world,” said Barrow. “This money will make it easier for more business to come through our city. It’ll mean more jobs at the port and it’ll mean more jobs once it’s complete.”

“The Obama administration is committed to creating jobs, encouraging innovation and improving our nation’s economic competitiveness,” U.S. Commerce Secretary Gary Locke said. “This grant will enhance the region’s global market competitiveness and ability to create jobs by making vital infrastructure improvements needed to increase the Garden City terminal’s cargo capacity.”

This EDA investment will increase the number of containers that can be managed and maintained at the Garden City terminal in Savannah. It will incorporate advanced technology to implement state of the art systems approach to port operations to increase capacity and create jobs for the Savannah metropolitan are and the entire 10-county coastal Georgia region.
