Feb. 21 - Rep. Craig Gordon's Update Feb. 5-9

By Rep. Craig Gordon

February 21, 2018 - The week of February 5-9 at the state capitol was a productive one with much legislation being debated, revised and voted on by the full House. I co-sponsored House Bill 861 which relates to insurance issues and more clearly defines a rural area as any county in our state in which the principle business operations of an eligible business are located. If passed, this Act would become effective on July 1, 2018 and I believe it supports businesses of all size regardless of location.

I co-sponsored HB 850 which would create the Savannah State Farmer’s Market Authority. This legislation would include a master plan for an economic engine for a farmer’s market that would encompass rural farmers from Chatham County and 121 surrounding counties. I believe that this would be a wonderful venue that wouldshowcase Georgia's agricultural programs, help local farmers earn revenue and include the participation of 4-H clubs which help our youth develop life skills through hands-on learning experiences. I will keep you informed as this bill moves through the legislative process and it is my hope that it is signed this legislative session.

I was pleased to co-sponsor House Resolution 1128 which recognizes and commends New Horizons Counseling Services for their work in our community. New Horizons is a nonprofit outpatient facility that was founded in 2001 by Dr. Deidre Moss-Pinkney and provides psychotherapy, substance abuse counseling, case management and parenting services. It was founded on behalf of at-risk youth in urban and rural areas and the staff and volunteers are dedicated to making a difference in the lives of others. I’m grateful for the commitment that New Horizons has in helping others toward mental health and the commendation is well-deserved.

I also co-sponsored HR 1093 honoring Dr. John Crawford Lipman for his exemplary service and achievements as a physician. Dr. Lipman is recognized worldwide for advancements he has made in the treatment of uterine fibroid treatment. In addition to training other physicians and speaking to community groups about non-invasive treatment options, Dr. Lipman volunteers his time to the Good Samaritan Health Center, which provides medical care for those without the means to afford traditional care. Georgia is a better place thanks to people like Dr. Lipman.

We will continue to consider legislation as the session reaches the halfway point and some of them may impact your livelihood and our community. I’ll keep you updated on these issues and I always appreciate your valuable input as the session continues. Please feel free to contact me at 404.656.0287. Thank you for allowing me to represent you!
