January 5, 2017 - Sources have confirmed that the Georgia Board of Regents will announce tomorrow that Georgia Southern Univ. and Armstrong State Univ. will begin a study to merge. The concept is that the Savannah campus of ASU will become a GSU campus, with an anticipated doubling of the student enrollment here in future years.
That's good news for area students who hope to attend GSU, who will now be able to commute.
And, it's a major financial impact for the County, and the educated workforce that will potentially stay here after graduation, if the merger goes through.
One source said, "Everyone's in agreement; it's going to happen."
ASU's president Linda Bleithen announced her retirement at the end of the school year, but no search for her replacement had been announced. The news now puts into focus the reasoning of the Board of Regents in holding up a search.
A formal press announcement about the study is expected at 10 a.m. Friday that will provide more details.
The university system owns developable land adjacent to ASU in Savannah to allow for expansion,, including a lot on the north side of Abercorn Street extention.
