March 8 - Georgia Tech-Savannah to Hold Coding Teacher Training Program

Savannah Business Journal Staff Report

March 8, 2018 - Georgia Tech-Savannah will hold a coding teacher training program, featuring EarSketch, on April 26 - 27 on campus. EarSketch teaches students the fundamentals of coding through a creative medium.

“By combining creativity with coding principles, EarSketch makes it fun and engaging for students to understand the coding languages of Python and JavaScript by making music,” said Diane Lee, director of Georgia Tech-Savannah. “We invite public and private schools to send their technology instructors to our teacher training program to learn how they can use EarSketch to enrich their current curriculum.”

Developed by Georgia Tech faculty, EarSketch doesn’t require any previous coding experience, is completely free to use, and is web-based. It is accessible anywhere there is an internet connection. Students learn to code in Python or JavaScript, two of the most popular programming languages in the world, by creating their own sounds which lead to original music. The program was made to be easily integrated into a school’s current technology curriculum.

Georgia Tech-Savannah’s teacher training program will provide 2nd through 8th grade teachers with the tools to learn the program and implement it in their school’s current introductory computing or technology courses. Teachers will be provided lesson plans, slides, projects, assessments, and other teaching materials for an EarSketch programming module aligned with any similar Computer Science Principles course.
