Savannah Business Journal Staff Report

January 2, 2018 - In The Atlantic’s 2013 article “How Not to Die,”  Dr. Angelo Volandes is quoted as saying, “Physicians are good people. They want to do the right things. And yet all of us, behind closed doors, in the cafeteria, say, ‘Do you believe what we did to that patient? Do you believe what we put that patient through?’...The most urgent issue facing America today is people getting medical interventions that, if they were more informed, they would not want. It happens all the time.”

Hospice Savannah will welcome Dr. Volandes, renowned author and patient rights’ advocate, as the speaker for its 10th Annual Lecture Series. The public is invited to attend a complimentary “Coffee, Croissant and Conversation” on Friday, Jan. 26, 2018 at  9:45 a.m. in the Eckburg Auditorium at Savannah Technical College, 5717 White Bluff, when he will discuss his low-tech, high-empathy plan to revolutionize end-of-life care in America.

Dr. Volandes practices internal medicine at Mass General and is on faculty at Harvard Medical School. He is the co-founder and President of the non-profit foundation Advance Care Planning (ACP) Decisions and is the author of “The Conversation: A Revolutionary Plan for End-of-Life Care.”  Books will be available for purchase at the lecture.

Dr. Volandes will also address physicians at the Plantation Club on Thursday, Jan. 25 (call 912.629.1043 to RSVP) and present at Memorial UMC’s Grand Rounds on Friday morning. The lecture series is sponsored by the St. Joseph’s/Candler Foundations; an anonymous donor; Meyer & Sayers, LLP; and Costrini Health Decisions. Additional support is provided by Cutters Point Coffee, Savannah Technical College and The Landings Club.

More information can be found at www.HospiceSavannah.org/Annual-Lecture-Series. The Lecture Series is held annually in fulfillment of not for profit Hospice Savannah’s mission of providing the best services and resources on living with a life-limiting illness, dying, death, grief and loss. Help is provided throughout five Coastal Empire counties.
