Savannah Business Journal Staff Report

October 26, 2018 - Embarking on its 12th season, the Savannah Book Festival is pleased to announce the authors scheduled to present the Opening, Keynote and Closing Addresses for the 2019 Savannah Book Festival, which is taking place from Feb. 14 – 17, 2019.

George Saunders, winner of the 2017 Man Booker prize for his first novel, a New York Times #1 Bestseller, Lincoln in the Bardo, will present the Opening Address on Thursday, Feb.14, with his debut novelist wife, Paula Saunders. George is the author of nine books, including Tenth of December, an essay collection which was a finalist for the National Book Award and won the inaugural Folio Prize. He has received MacArthur and Guggenheim fellowships and the PEN/Malamud Prize for excellence in the short story. His newest book, Fox 8, will be published in November. Paula Saunders published her debut novel, A Distance Home, this summer. They will be discussing their writing lives, processes and inspirations.

Daniel Krauthammer will present the Keynote Address on Friday, Feb. 15, to discuss the last work of his father, Charles Krauthammer, The Point of it All: A Lifetime of Great Loves and Endeavors. The book explores Charles’ notable writings and speeches from his 30 years as a national columnist and philosopher, covering topics like politics, popular culture, medicine, and human nature before he died in June at the age of 68. The collection, which Charles was working on before he passed away and was edited by Daniel, also includes a deeply personal section on family, living with disability and dying, as well as Daniel’s eulogy for his father. Daniel is a syndicated columnist and political commentator whose writings appear in The Weekly Standard, New Republic and The National Review with a focus on economics, foreign affairs and finance.

New York Times bestselling author Lynn Vincent and acclaimed documentary filmmaker Sara Vladic will present the Closing Address on Sunday, Feb. 17 to discuss their book, Indianapolis, a sweeping saga of survival, sacrifice, justice, and love. Indianapolis stands as both groundbreaking naval history and spellbinding narrative—and brings the ship and her heroic crew back to full, vivid, unforgettable life. It is the definitive account of one of the most remarkable episodes in American history. Sara is one of the world’s leading experts on the USS Indianapolis and interviewed 108 of the ship’s survivors. In 2016, Sara released an award-winning documentary film on the disaster, USS Indianapolis: The Legacy. Lynn is a US Navy veteran and a #1 New York Times bestselling author and co-author of eleven nonfiction books with more than sixteen million copies in print.

The Opening, Keynote and Closing Addresses will be presented at the Historic Lucas Theatre for the Arts. Tickets are $20 and go on sale on Jan. 10, 2019.

The Savannah Book Festival Inc. (SBF) is an independent, non-profit corporation committed to encouraging literacy and the love of books. SBF presents best-selling and emerging authors at a four-day Presidents’ Day weekend event featuring talks by dozens of authors. Festival Saturday, Feb. 16, which is free and open to the public from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., will feature 45 authors in locations in and around Telfair, Wright and Chippewa Squares in Savannah’s Historic District.
