June 8 – EDITORIAL: Immediate investigation of Memorial Legal Dept. employee is appropriate

Category: Health & Hospitals

Coastal Empire News

June 8, 2016 – The following email was sent to our company today, Coastal Empire News.  It appears to be an email from Tish Askew, an Executive Assistant in the Legal Dept. of Memorial Health hospital system, to Don Waters, Chairman of the Chatham County Hospital Authority (CCHA).  There is a “cc” to Al Scott, Chairman of the Chatham County Commissioners.

We have not spoken to any of the parties, as the email speaks for itself – it appears to be a threat, a pure and clear threat due to the request for information by Waters in his role as Chairman of the CCHA.

None of the recipients of the email were our source for the document, and we are honored by those who trust our company and our journalism in tackling many of the difficult stories in our City and County that sent it to us.

The lack of professionalism demonstrated by an employee at Memorial Health, Inc. appears to be unacceptable, if Ms. Askew was, in fact, the author.

We call on the Memorial Board to form a sub-committee immediately that excludes its Chairman, or any member of the hospital's administration, to begin a forthright investigation with a possible action of dismissal of Ms. Askew should a review of the hospital's computer server prove that she did, in fact, author this email.

This company has made a number of Open Records Requests of Memorial, and are filing more tomorrow.  Other media companies in this city have done so, as well.  That Don Waters is also seeking documents is appropriate in carrying out his fiduciary responsibility to the citizens of Chatham County.

After reading this email, we are sure the reader will agree that an investigation is appropriate.

Subject: What is your motivation?

What exactly is your motivation behind all of your recent actions?

Everything is in print.  Every text has been documented, screen shot, and printed.  Don, you better be careful with your threats to people.  Period.  I have seen them.

It would be in your best interest to review the lease, back off, and shut your mouths.

You two wouldn't make it in a big city so you have Chatham County as your big pond.  Pitiful.

You better hope you don't have a traumatic injury or vehicle accident and have to go to Memorial....... karma is a b!tch.

As a clinical team member this makes me sad and it would never happen. We can argue politics all day, but when a patient rolls in they deserve and get the very best we have to offer. That is why everyone is so proud and protective of Memorial. We love our patients and treasure the ability to serve

This is awesome! I applaud Ms Askew for saying what many are thinking. You can see that she sent the email from her personal account so she is speaking for herself, not the hospital. Just because someone calls out the local good old boys they immediately get attacked by the newspaper and Lou Phelps.

I am a nurse in the Trauma ICU at Memorial. Everyone I work with Shares great pride in the care we deliver. I am sure that none of us feel this way. If Mr Waters or Mr Scott or their families have the misfortune to arrive in our unit as a patient they can rest assured we will provide great care.

I applaud Ms. Askew! She has the guts to tell the truth. I look frwd to seeing the outcome of this investigation. Mr. Waters has been caught red handed telling untruths. I can't wait for the whole truth to be told to the public. The real question is will the SBJ have the integrity to print the truth
