April 23 – Chatham-Savannah Counter Narcotics Team Arrests Local Nurse for Alleged Theft of Drugs With Intent to Distribute

Category: Health & Hospitals

SBJ Staff Report

April 23 - A registered nurse is in custody after an investigation found she was allegedly stealing medication while on-duty. Earlier today, the Chatham-Savannah Counter Narcotics Team (CNT) arrested 34-year-old Katherine Alvarado-Torres, a registered nurse, at Memorial Medical Center (MMC) in Savannah. Alvarado-Torres was employed as a nurse at MMC at the time of her arrest.

Alvarado-Torres was charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance (Percocet) with Intent to Distribute and Theft by Taking.  She is currently being held at the Chatham County Detention Center.

CNT’s investigation into Alvarado-Torres began early this morning after CNT was contacted by MMC’s security department. MMC security informed CNT of an internal investigation involving a current patient missing prescription pain medication. During the joint CNT and MMC investigation, it was determined Alvarado-Torres stole a small number of prescription pain medication from a current patient. The thefts occurred on two separate incidents in which the medication was replaced with a counterfeit substance. The investigation also determined this is likely an isolated incident and that Alvarado-Torres was giving the pills to a person known to Alvarado-Torres.

This is an on-going investigation and additional charges and arrests are possible.

CNT stated that they “would like to thank MMC security for their partnership and credit their quick action which greatly aided in the investigation,” in a press release today to local media.
