Savannah’s 2009 Holiday Tour of Homes Scheduled for Dec. 12

Category: Hospitality & Tourism

10/26/2009 - Savannah is well-known as “The Hostess City,” and knows very well how to treat the  many guests who vist each year. With the holidays fast approaching, many of the visitors eagerly look forward to the annual Holiday Tour of Historic Homes, slated for Saturday, Dec. 12.

Homes throughout the Historic District will feature traditional decorations – and some less so – conveying the 19th century holiday atmosphere, and squares through downtown will be seasonally decked with boughs of holly.

Local merchants will also take part, with some extending Southern hospitality in the form of complimentary cider and other treats.
According to www.dnaholidaytour.com, the tour’s official Web site, “this event has been described as ‘an intimate visit with residents of Savannah's Historic District.’  Sponsored by the Downtown Neighborhood Association, individual owners host the tour, sharing the often unique history of each home with their guests.

Guests are guided by a tour program  at Tour Headquarters, which features maps, directions and descriptions of participating homes.  Staff at the Tour Headquarters will also be available for assistance.

Two tours will be offered. The Afternoon Walking Tour starts at 11 a.m. and will feature six festively decorated historic residences. The evening tour begins at 5:00 pm, as twilight descends.

Six homes, seperate from the afternoon tour, will be open for touring.  All of the homes are within walking distance, but trolley shuttle service between stops near the main groups of homes is included in the evening tour for those who prefer to ride.

From 3-5 p.m., there will be an “open time” during which the Downtown Garden Club of Savannah will host a Victorian Tea in a unique mansion not on either home tour. Tea, sandwiches and other treats will be served by club members in genuine Victorian dress.  Tickets are limited to two time slots, 3 to 4 p.m. and 4 to 5 p.m.  Docents will be on hand to guide guests through the home.

In addition, six private inns will be open to visitors on Sunday afternoon, after the Saturday Holiday Tour of Homes.

Tickets for all events may be purchased online in advance at www.dnaholidaytour.com for pick-up at our Bryson Hall Holiday Tour of Homes Headquarters (at 5 East Perry St.) on Saturday, Dec. 12th between 9:30 am and 5:30 pm.  For the new Sunday Holiday Tour of Inns, pre-paid tickets may also be picked up at the Savannah B&B Inn between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 13th.

Tickets are $30 per person for each tour (afternoon or evening) and $20 each for the Victorian Tea and Sunday Holiday Tour of Inns.
Tour proceeds go to the protection and enhancement of Savannah's downtown Landmark Historic District.
