February 11, 2019 - Walls’ BBQ is a small family-owned restaurant nestled off York Lane within Savannah’s Historic Landmark District. Opened since 1963, this family woodshed turned barbecue restaurant has been serving locals and visitors homemade family recipes for decades. Now, the building is in desperate need of repairs and upgrades to keep up with modern health and safety codes. Money raised in the crowdfunding campaign, organized by Savannah Taste Experience, will go towards much-needed kitchen repairs, a new deep freezer, commercial grade doors and fire extinguishers, inspections, food and more, roughly totaling $6,000.

Stu and Donald Card, owners of Savannah Taste Experience Food Tours, first discovered Walls’ BBQ while researching food and restaurants for their Famous & Secret East Side Food Tour. The home-style southern-cooking restaurant became one of the first restaurants on that tour route which launched in early 2013, “because it is both delicious and so obviously historically important” says Stu Card. “With Savannah’s immense growth since the 1980s it is easy to forget that the east side of Savannah was once the segregated part of the city, “Donald Card adds, “and Walls’ has been operating since the very first days of desegregation.”. Teresa Weston, the current owner of Walls’, is not only the granddaughter of the original owner, but she’s been cooking her family’s recipes at the restaurant since she was 13 years old. “It’s one of the few places in the city where visitors can taste what Savannah’s food was like in the 1960s.” adds Stu Card. The importance and history of the restaurant was captured in Stu and Donald’s book, Savannah Food: A Delicious History.

Unfortunately, Walls’ BBQ abruptly closed in August 2018 due to fire and safety concerns relating to the 1960s building. Not able to immediate retrofit the aging building to meet modern fire and safety codes, Teresa Weston reluctantly and indefinitely closed the restaurant’s doors.

Savannah Taste Experience hopes to re-open Walls’ BBQ by Teresa’s birthday on March 4, 2019. All proceeds raised will go towards getting Walls’ BBQ doors back open to the public. Supporters can visit the GoFundMe campaign to donate. Those who donate will be entered in a chance to win random giveaway prizes like Savannah Taste Experience Food Tour tickets, a Walls’ BBQ for six and more.
