April 17 - Savannah Taste Experience Announces a Successful Crowdfunding Campaign to Reopen Walls' BBQ Restaurant

Category: Hospitality & Tourism

Savannah Business Journal Staff Report

April 17, 2019 - Over two months ago, Savannah Taste Experience reached out to the local community to help raise money to reopen Walls’ BBQ, a family-owned restaurant nestled off York Lane within Savannah’s Landmark Historic District. Opened since 1963, this family wood shed turned barbecue restaurant has been serving locals and visitors homemade family recipes for decades. Closed late last year, the building was in desperate need of repairs and upgrades to keep up with modern health and safety codes.

Upon hearing the news, Stu and Donald Card, owners of Savannah Taste Experience, knew that something needed to be done. They focused their efforts and created a crowdfunding campaign to raise money that would go towards the kitchen repairs, a new deep freezer, commercial grade doors and fire extinguishers, inspections, food and more, with a goal of $6,000. With over 70 donations from supporters across the country, they raised over $4,575! Savannah Taste Experience covered the difference of the crowdfunding goal.

Work on the necessary upgrades has been underway thanks to transplant carpenter, Michael Cezzatto, who’s been generously donating his time and talents. Their hope is to welcome Walls’ BBQ back to the Famous & Secret East Side Food Tour by Wednesday, April 24. Those looking to experience the food tour featuring the revitalized Walls’ BBQ – tickets are still available online. To thank the local community, Teresa Weston, owner of Walls’ BBQ, will be hosting a grand reopening celebration on Saturday, April 27 at 2 p.m. Once opened, Walls’ BBQ hours of operation will be Fridays and Saturdays from 12 p.m. to 9 p.m., with the hopes of adding additional days in the near future.
