March 25 - SPD Activates Phase 1 of COVID-19 Response and Operations Plan

Savannah Business Journal Staff Report

March 25, 2020 - In an effort to help mitigate the spread of COVID-19 as seven cases have been confirmed in Chatham County at this time, the Savannah Police Department will move to Phase 1 of their COVID-19 Response and Operations Plan (RAOP) effective March 25 at 6 a.m. This plan entails the minimization of calls that officers respond to and limiting public access to SPD buildings.

In accordance with the COVID-19 RAOP, officers will no longer respond to calls to take reports which may be filed using the Online Police Reporting SystemLive Stream Video Reporting service or by calling the SPD Customer Service Desk at (912) 651-6675. Officers will continue to respond to calls that require an immediate response, involve an injured person or are in-progress.

The Chatham County E911 Center will work with callers to ensure optimal service and that callers have a full understanding of their options at this time. SPD officers will work to educate community members and neighborhood leaders about this temporary change of service.

Public access to SPD buildings will only be granted to those experiencing an emergency. The Open Records Department located at the Northwest Precinct will no longer take walk-in customers for the time being. Those in need of a police report can submit a request by emailing This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or calling (912) 651-3617 Option 1. The Open Records Department’s office hours are Monday-Friday, 8 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.

The Customer Service Desk at SPD Headquarters will still issue tow release forms Monday-Sunday from 7 a.m. to midnight; however, customers will interact with SPD representatives through a designated portal that will limit physical contact. Customers will have to provide proof of ownership, identification or a valid driver’s license and valid insurance. Copies of those items can be emailed to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. prior to arrival. Please use the intercom next to the main entrance for assistance.

“We understand that these are unprecedented times and times of great concern for our community,” said Chief of Police Roy Minter. “In order to continue to safeguard the health and safety our community and officers, we have decided to utilize call response minimization efforts to help mitigate the spread of the novel coronavirus. We are happy that our Live Stream Video Reporting service is functional at this time, which will give officers and callers a chance for face-to-face interaction, which is in line with our relationship-building strategy.”
