Category: Law

By Lou Phelps, SBJ

May 25, 2018 - The Port Wentworth City Council appears to have voted Thursday evening in Executive Session - in violation of Georgia Open Meeting laws - to fire their new City Attorney, Jimmy Courfey.
And, the Port Wentworth Clerk of Council confirmed that Interim City Manager Carter Crawford quit last night over the action.  He reportedly walked out of the Executive Session.
The seven member City Council includes six members and Mayor Gary Norton, who only votes in the case of a tie.  Member Debbie Johnson did not attend the meeting.
Sources state that members Barker, Fox and Dow voted to fire Atty. Courfey.
As they exited the session, the three were told that they had to return to Open Session to legally vote on the action, but Barker, Fox and Dow were observed leaving City Hall.
Atty Courfey was told that he had been fired.
Coastal Empire News has filed a complaint with the Georgia Attorney General's Office, seeking a review of the Council's action.
Attempts to reach Mayor Norton have been unsuccessful.
