Savannah Business Journal Staff Report
June 28, 2018 - On Saturday, June 30 at 2 p.m., Savannah area residents will gather in Johnson Square to protest the policy of forcibly separating children from their parents and to demand that separated families immediately be reunited.
The non-partisan event is being organized by The Savannah Undocumented Youth Alliance (La Suya), with support and endorsements from numerous local service and faith-based organizations. Scheduled speakers include a number of people directly affected by these policies, as well as faith leaders in the Savannah community. Congressional candidate Lisa Ring is also scheduled to speak.
“Our goal is to bring awareness to the plight of immigrants coming to the United States, and especially to the conditions under which immigrant children are being held,” said La Suya President Daniela Rodriguez. “No matter what your politics are, I think we can all agree that children should not be prisoners.”
The event will also include information on local organizations serving immigrant and refugee families, as well as opportunities to assist with local voter registration efforts. The rally will begin at 2 p.m. and conclude with a peaceful march to Savannah’s City Hall.
