Savannah Business Journal Staff Report

October 5, 2017 - Savage, Turner, Pinckney & Savage announced today that James D. (“Jim”) Durham, recent Acting U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Georgia, has joined its firm as a partner.  The Savannah firm will now be called Savage, Turner, Durham, Pinckney & Savage.

Durham is an accomplished trial lawyer who, during 15 years of public service, gained national recognition as a relentless advocate handling some of the most complex and important criminal cases in the Department of Justice.  In the past five years alone, Durham’s prosecutions led to the return of over $75 million to victims of crimes and the American taxpayers.  In recognition of his superior trial skills, Durham was recently inducted into the prestigious American College of Trial Lawyers.

“Our practice is designed to help businesses and people overcome tough, complicated problems,” said managing partner Brent J. Savage. “Jim Durham has spent his entire career doing just that at the most elite level. He gets results.”

“Jim Durham is one of the most effective litigators in the country,” said founding partner Bart Turner. “Having him on our side is a huge advantage.”

“I’m humbled and honored to work side-by-side with some of the best trial lawyers in our community while we represent the victims of misconduct,” said Mr. Durham. “These lawyers put together the best teams in the most difficult cases. And they win.”

Durham began his legal career in 1995 at Chilivis, Cochran, Larkins & Bever, an Atlanta firm specializing in complex civil litigation and white collar criminal defense.  After becoming a partner of the Chilivis firm in 2001, Durham left private practice in 2002 to serve as an Assistant U.S. Attorney in Savannah.  While continuing to prosecute a full caseload of complex fraud and public corruption cases, Durham also served as the Southern District of Georgia’s Criminal Chief (2007-2010); First Assistant U.S. Attorney (2010-2017); then Acting U.S. Attorney (2017).  Durham received his B.A. from Princeton University and his J.D. from the University of Georgia.

Distinguished litigators took notice of Durham’s move:

“Jim represented the very best of the Department of Justice – skill, courage, and an unrelenting dedication to the mission of the Department. Not only is Jim a fantastic attorney, he has always demonstrated a special responsibility to seek justice.”

- Sally Yates, Former U.S. Deputy Attorney General

“Jim Durham will continue his outstanding career with the Savage, Turner, Durham, Pinckney & Savage law firm. Jim set a very high standard for quality advocacy on behalf of the United States during his 15-year career as an Assistant U.S. Attorney and as the Acting U.S. Attorney in the Southern District of Georgia. Jim's reputation among prosecutors, defense attorneys and the judiciary is exceptional, reflecting both the legal skill and integrity Jim brings to his work as an attorney each and every day.”

- Joe Whitley, Partner at Baker, Donelson; Former U.S. Attorney for the Middle and Northern Districts of Georgia; and Former Department of Homeland Security General Counsel

“Jim had a brilliant career in the U.S. Attorney’s office, serving our country well with hard work, honor and professionalism.  He was always tough but fair. He was one of the top federal prosecutors nationally and will be a formidable litigator in private practice.”

- Craig Gillen, Partner at Gillen, Withers & Lake; Former Deputy Independent Counsel (Iran-Contra); Former Assistant U.S. Attorney, Northern District of Georgia
