May 7 - Mayor Plugging Savannah Business Potential on Israel Trip

May 7, 2012 -- Mayor Edna B. Jackson is in Israel to attend the weeklong International Mayors Conference and explore various international economic development opportunities.

Jackson is attending at the invitation of the Israeli Consul General. The Israeli Government and the Savannah Jewish Federation are funding the trip. She is one of four U.S. Mayors to attend.

While in Israel, Jackson will meet with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Israeli economic development officials, and Mayors from across the globe to discuss common challenges and opportunities. She will explore tourism partnerships, relationships with the Port of Haifa and connections with major industry, such as Israeli Aerospace Industries, which builds jets for Savannah-based Gulfstream Aerospace.

Totals for 2011 show that Georgia did trade with Israel valued at $168 million, making the tiny Mideastern nation the Peach State’s 39th largest trading parter.

7,729,200.00. The 2011 trade revewnue marked a 5 percent increase from 2010, according to the Georgia Department of Economic Development, which has a trade office in Jerusalem.

The department says the office serves as a one-stop shop for businesses looking for the right opportunity to break into the American business market.

Jackson said it is important that Savannah continues to build  relationships beyond “our borders to compete in this new century,”

Savannah, she said, “is becoming known across the globe as a place of choice to do business.”

Two years ago the City created the Greater Savannah International Alliance (GSIA) to foster international relationships that benefit the region through commerce, culture, tourism and education. The Alliance, together with the emerging World Trade Center Savannah being developed by SEDA, seek to ensure that the infrastructure exists locally to attract and nurture foreign investment in Savannah.
