July 6 - Sheriff's Candidates' Forum Slated for July 12

July 6, 2012 - On July 12, 2012, a candidates' forum will be held at the Southwest Branch of the Live Oak Public Library. Panel questions and answers followed by a short reception.

Citizens will be given an opportunity to meet the candidates and make informed decisions regarding the election process. The purpose of the event will be to highlight local candidates, issues, voting and to encourage voter registration. The event sponsored by Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority and the Chatham County Democratic Committee is free and open to the public.

"A Vote Less People is a Hopeless People" was initiated as a national program of Alpha during the 1930s. Voter education and registration has remained a dominant focus of this outreach activity for over 65 years. In the 1990s, the focus has shifted to include political awareness and empowerment, delivered most frequently through town meetings and candidate forums.

Hosted by Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc., Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc., the Georgia Democratic Party and the Chatham County Democratic Committee, the event will be moderated by Dawn Baker, panelists include Chester Dunham, Tanya Milton and Mariella Normanic.

"It's important for people to become engaged, but we don't want to preach to them, or tell them how to vote," project chairman Jerry Greene stated.

This is the first forum of this year's campaign but there are other components including voter registration canvassing and a seminar, "Getting Involved in Politics."
