July 19 - Garden City Earns 2011 Distinguished Budget Award

Category: Local Govts & Politics

July 19, 2011 - The Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) recently honored Garden City with the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award in recognition of outstanding budget preparation for the fiscal year beginning Jan. 1, 2011. The award marks the third consecutive year that Garden City has earned this sought-after honor.

"Garden City is truly dedicated to fiscal responsibility and financial transparency at every level," said City Manager Brian Johnson. "We are deeply committed to fiduciary excellence and are grateful for this national recognition for our efforts."

In order to qualify for the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award, Garden City had to satisfy nationally-recognized guidelines for effective budget presentation. Budgets must meet 14 mandatory criteria and serve as an effective policy document, financial plan, operations guide and communications device in order to be considered for the award.

"We are honored to receive this national award from GFOA for the third year in a row," said Cory Salley, Director of Finance for Garden City. "This award validates the City's hard work and commitment to responsible and efficient budgeting."

In January 2011, GFOA also honored Garden City with a Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting for its FY 2009 Comprehensive Annual Financial Report. Less than three percent of municipalities in Georgia earned the budget award and the annual financial report award in the same reporting period in 2010.

The Government Finance Officers Association is a non-profit professional organization serving more than 17,600 government finance professionals throughout North America. The GFOA's Distinguished Budget Presentation Award is the only national awards program dedicated to governmental budgeting.
