March 15, 2019 - The City of Savannah honored four-time Alderman Clifton Jones and his wife Ernestine J. Jones by dedicating a portion of Stuyvesant Street, from Liberty Parkway east to Harvest Avenue as Clifton & Ernestine J. Jones Street last Friday.

More than 50 community members gathered to celebrate the legacy of Clifton & Ernestine J. Jones, who are both high school graduates of Savannah schools. Mr. Jones was an original founder of the Liberty City-Richfield-Southover Improvement Association and served as the president for over 26 years. He served as Alderman for Savannah’s Fifth District for 16 years. Mrs. Jones worked for the Beaufort County School System for 31 years and served on numerous boards and authorities. Mr. and Mrs. Jones were married for 62 years, prior to her death in 2018.

“It gives me great privilege and honor to be your successor Mr. Jones,” said District 5 Alderwoman Dr. Estella Shabazz. “I stand on your shoulder because you are a giant.”

An honorary street designation recognizes an individual who has made significant contributions to the City. The honorary street designation is a temporary five year period. City Council unanimously approved the designation during the February 28 council meeting.

“I am honest enough to tell you that I do not know why I got involved,” said former District 5 Alderman Clifton Jones. “But when I started to do it, the people would not let me stop.”

Last week's ceremony was attended by District 5 Alderwoman Dr. Estella Shabazz, Former District 5 Alderman Clifton Jones, Daughters Glynda and Karen Jones, Nephew Ricky Brown, President of the Liberty City- Southover- Richfield Community Improvement Association Ulyssess Bryant and Original Organizer of the Liberty City- Southover- Richfield Community Improvement Association Howard Dawson.
