Savannah Business Journal Staff Report

October 16, 2019 - The Chatham Emergency Management Agency (CEMA) has started a new initiative with a local middle/high school mentoring program: Academic Girls Empowering for Success (AGES) to help put on the County’s first HERricane Academy. The concept of the HERricane Academy is to empower young women to pursue careers and leadership roles in emergency management. This is the third time that this type of program has been offered in the country and a first for the state of Georgia and Chatham County.

With this partnership, CEMA staff will work with the AGES participants, known as Flowers, to help them better understand the threat of hurricanes in our community and how they can empower others to prepare. The program began last week, Oct. 8, with an introduction to hurricane preparedness lesson taught at the Moses Jackson Community Center.

This Saturday, Oct. 19, at the Coastal Georgia Botanical Gardens, the Flowers will have the opportunity to use their new knowledge to teach a group of younger girls about preparedness. In a partnership with another young girl mentoring program, Empowering Beauties of Today, the AGES Flowers will lead a program discussing hurricanes, coping skills during a disaster and how to create their own youth emergency kit. Participants will receive their own drawstring bag with some supplies to begin their kits.

The October sessions will end on Oct. 22 at the Moses Jackson Community Center where CEMA staff will assist the Flowers in creating their very first emergency preparedness video. The video will be shared on CEMA’s social media pages for all of Chatham County to learn how to create their own emergency kits and prepare for hurricanes.

The HERricane Academy program will begin again in March 2020 with a new lesson in preparedness.
